Karl Wilhelm, Founder of Karlsruhe: May 9 - October 18, 2015 at the Baden State Museum Karlsruhe

Karl Wilhelm 1679-1738 Baden Prince and Founder of Karlsruhe

Weinbrenner

Karlsruhe Palace Karl Wilhelm, Margrave of Baden-Durlach, made his ambitious dream a reality at the age of 36: On June 17, 1715, the young sovereign ceremoniously laid the first stone of his new palace and, in the same year, founded the city that still carries his name to this day: Karlsruhe.

In honor of the city’s 300-year anniversary, this very same palace – and heart of the fan-shaped city – will host the Large State Exhibition 2015, which is dedicated to the fascinating personality of the city founder for the very first time.

The life of Karl Wilhelm was a symbol of absolutism. While his contemporaries described him as strong-willed, inquisitive, despotic, and vain, they also knew him as a pragmatic, socially engaged economist and courageous war officer. He was also said to have radiated strength, beauty, and charm – half Hercules, half cupid. Although married to Magdalene Wilhelmine of Württemberg, his passion was reserved for exotic flowers, alchemy, pipe tobacco, hunting, canaries, and – last but not least – the fairer sex. These interests gained him fame far beyond state borders. Karlsruhe Palace and its grounds are remnants of the splendor of former days and unique in the entire world. The Large State Exhibition “Karl Wilhelm 1679 – 1738” presents a fascinating portrait of this enigmatic personality through first-class exhibits, some of which are accessible to the public for the first time.
